PlaceboTech Research Laboratory
Independent research laboratory

The physical chemistry of water, spin, and enzymatic function.

PlaceboTech is an independent laboratory investigating how molecular order in water and nuclear-spin effects in enzymes govern biological energy and function — and building the instrumentation to measure it.

Research program

Three lines of inquiry, one question: how does order carry function?

Each program builds on established, peer-reviewed physical chemistry and extends it experimentally. We report what the measurements support and label open questions as open.

PROGRAM 01

Structured & Interfacial Water

“Living Water.” Characterizing the ordered, exclusion-zone layer that forms at hydrophilic interfaces — its optical, thermal, and dielectric signatures, and how templated conditions affect its persistence.

Foundation: Pollack, interfacial / exclusion-zone water; classical interfacial electrochemistry.
PROGRAM 02

Spin Chemistry of Enzyme Function

Magnetic-isotope and nuclear-spin effects on enzymatic catalysis and protein folding — how the nuclear spin of a metal center (e.g. magnesium isotopes) modulates reaction rates in ATP-linked chemistry.

Foundation: Buchachenko, the magnetic isotope effect in enzymatic ATP synthesis.
PROGRAM 03

Biofeedback Instrumentation

The Whisper device — an autonomic-sensing instrument that reads heart-rate variability in real time as an external measure of nervous-system state, for closed-loop biofeedback research.

Foundation: established HRV autonomic physiology; beat-to-beat telemetry.
Approach & methods

Measurement first.

Bench methods currently in use across the programs. Every claim is tied to an instrument reading against a control; a negative result is reported as a result.

UV–Vis spectrophotometry — absorbance and decay-rate measurement vs. control samples
Optical interferometry — birefringence and refractive-index change in treated media
Enzymatic activity assays — e.g. catalase rate assays as a functional readout
Structured-light templating — spatial-mode illumination of self-assembling media
HRV telemetry — beat-to-beat R–R acquisition and autonomic-state analysis
Controlled comparison — blinded treatment-vs-control design with noise-floor reporting
